The Maketis double track Helix: a major asset for the Easy Module range

The Maketis double track Helix: a major asset for the Easy Module range

Categories : News , Our projects

Introduction

The helix has long been a true object of fascination for railway modellers. It is a dream, because it allows several levels of a layout to be connected and offers spectacular train operations, but it is also known as one of the most complex carpentry pieces to build yourself. Calculations, curve radii, controlled gradients, perfect alignments… a real headache for many!

Yet, its advantages are numerous: saving space by using height, creating multiple levels without increasing floor area, building hidden yards for train storage, running longer and more realistic trains, and guaranteed spectacle during ascents and descents. It is an essential element to fully exploit the potential of a model railway layout.

At Maketis, we decided to take up this challenge and finally offer a reliable, accessible, ready-to-use solution.

The genesis of the project

From the very beginning, we were aware that we were tackling an ambitious project with several challenges to solve: offering a helix in our catalogue without copying what already existed. We wanted to design an innovative helix, easy to build, delivered with its support and connection elements to integrate into an existing layout. We also included in our specifications a helix that complies with NEM standards, modular and expandable (oval shape, variable diameter, full compatibility with the Easy Module range, etc.). After several sketches and design phases, we modelled the project with CAD software, then machined and assembled the first pieces in our workshop.

Having already built two helices for my personal layout and not being fully satisfied with their reliability, I realised that the concept had to be completely rethought. The Biscatrain blog, showing the benefits of a helix without threaded rods, confirmed our conviction to find an innovative and durable solution.

The satisfaction of the first tests

The most memorable moment was the assembly of the first prototype, starting with the support and then the helix itself. The support was the basis of our thinking and the most demanding part: it was necessary to design a modular and scalable element, just like the helix. After hours of machining and assembly, seeing the structure being easily mounted thanks to the mortise-and-tenon system was immensely satisfying. Several adjustments were then made to ensure a well-designed and reliable product.

But the highlight was the first running tests: watching a train climb 4 turns of the helix smoothly, without derailments or wheel slip. We were truly satisfied with the result, because it was no longer just an idea on paper, but a concrete and successful solution: Objective achieved! A great moment in Maketis’ history, and we hope you will enjoy it on your own layout as well.

An innovation by Maketis

The first innovation concerns the helix support: it is made of a combination of 4 corner modules with a depth of 59 cm (ref. MOD71000). Each of these corner modules (ref. MOD70000) is a real novelty in its design: it does not rest on 4 legs like the others and has 3 interfaces of 59 cm instead of 4. Its structure is reinforced with corner pieces and improved fixings for a robust and durable connection.

When combined, they form a 118 × 118 cm platform resting on only 4 legs (instead of 6 or 8) and including a central access hole of 83 cm diagonal. This support was at the heart of our thinking, as we needed a modular and scalable base capable of hosting a helix with the same qualities. This is in itself an innovation, as no other manufacturer had offered such a modular and versatile solution. Moreover, this innovation directly benefits modellers, as it is more economical than buying two 118 × 59 cm modules.

The second innovation concerns the helix itself, resting on vertical wooden pillars. This technical choice represents a major improvement compared to classic threaded-rod-and-nut solutions: it eliminates stress on the platform or rods, ensures a regular slope and makes assembly very simple and quick. And this is perhaps the key point: building a 4-turn helix, solid and without gluing, in less than 15 minutes is now possible!

Result: simple assembly accessible to everyone, smooth and safe train running, and even improved locomotive performance capable of hauling longer trains.

Presentation of the developed products

Ø118 cm Helix MOD80000

Our Easy Module helix has many advantages:

  • Ø118 cm, specially designed for HO scale.
  • Available from 1 to 6 turns (90 mm per turn), up to 540 mm elevation.
  • Regular gradient: 2.6% on the outer track and 2.9% on the inner track.
  • Platform width suitable for double track, or for one main track + one siding track. In accordance with NEM standards.
  • Clearance of 82 mm between levels, allowing the running of electric locomotives with pantographs raised. In accordance with NEM standards.
  • Compatible with curved track sections from RocoLine (R4/R5), Piko (R3/R4) and Tillig (R31/R41). We strongly recommend these for easier and more reliable track laying.
  • Can be installed clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on your layout design.

Helix support MOD71000

  • 118 × 118 cm platform with central access 59 × 59 cm (diagonal 83 cm).
  • Dedicated support perfectly designed to host the helix. Can also be used as a reversing loop module!
  • 4 adjustable legs for optimal stability and precise leveling.
  • Made of 4 corner modules 59 × 59 cm (MOD70000) with 3 interfaces and reinforced corners/fixings.
  • 100% compatible with the Easy Module range (59 cm interfaces and 29.5 cm connections).

Pack helix + support MOD80100

  • Complete set including the Ø118 cm helix (MOD80000) and its dedicated support MOD71000 with 4 adjustable legs.
  • Combines all the features of MOD80000 and MOD71000 in a ready-to-use solution.
  • Economical and robust solution, perfectly suited for HO multi-level layouts.

Connection set MOD63000, for a perfect junction:

  • Includes: MOD63100 (straight entry 29.5 × 59 cm), MOD63110 (curved exit ~32 × 30 cm), 2 Woodland Scenic flexible ramp elements (3% slope) and MOD61000 (triangle module).
  • Usable clockwise or counter-clockwise, in ascent or descent, according to your plan.
  • Quick installation, no extra carpentry work, for smooth and derailment-free running.
  • Optimised connection thanks to the MOD63000 set, ensuring a smooth and secure transition between the helix and the Easy Module standard or lower modules.

Conclusion

After months of work, testing and passion, at Maketis we are proud to have achieved this goal and to offer you an innovative set that perfectly complements our Easy Module range.

And this is just the beginning: we are already planning further developments, such as a Ø129 cm helix adapted to curved track sections from Peco, Jouef, Hornby, Trix and Märklin, an oval version with straight platform segments, and even a parade track to showcase your trains outside the helix.

We invite you to discover this helix and its accessories on our online shop, and to watch our presentation video on our YouTube channel to see the helix in action.

With Maketis, build your model railway layout with ease and let your trains reach new heights!
