It was built in 1941 by Sparkman and Stephens Inc. for the army.
The first test was carried out on 3 June 1942 at MILFORD in MICHIGAN.
During the Second World War, 21,247 units were produced.
In the military dialect of the time, DUKW meant :
- D: year 1942 (first production),
- U: amphibious vehicle,
- K: all-wheel drive,
- W: two driven axles at the rear.
